When Chris Stephens lost his brother Mike to suicide in 2017, his world was forever changed. Mike, a Navy veteran and small business owner, had battled alcoholism since middle school and carried heavy burdens after service. Chris received the devastating call while on a family trip, far from home, and suddenly found himself navigating unimaginable grief. Out of that pain, #MilesForMike was born—a running movement and online community dedicated to sharing Mike’s story and raising awareness for veteran mental health. Chris’s path of resilience led him to join Stop Soldier Suicide as a Marketing Coordinator in 2023, where he now fights to ensure no other family has to experience the same loss. In this episode, Chris opens up about: 💙 Growing up side by side with Mike and the bond they shared 💙 The struggles veterans face with transition, addiction, and hidden wounds 💙 The impact of grief and finding strength in unexpected places 💙 How running and storytelling became a way to heal and honor his brother 💙 His upcoming run in the Marine Corps Marathon for the 250th anniversary of the Marines This is more than a story of loss—it’s a story of love, resilience, and carrying forward a legacy with purpose. ⸻ 💙 Support the mission: Donate to the William H. “Bill” Butler Jr. Foundation: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com/donate 🌐 Website: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com 🎙 Want to be a guest? In this episode of 8158: Stories of Sacrifice, we sit down with Kent Shelley—Army veteran, filmmaker, and founder of the Alpha Response Network (ARN). Born in England and raised around the world as the son of an Air Force serviceman, Kent eventually settled in Arizona and followed two passions: service and storytelling. After six years as a Military Police officer, he returned to film production and launched Cine48, creating tactical documentaries, including an eight-month project on the U.S. border. Today, Kent leads the Alpha Response Network, a raw, unfiltered series capturing law enforcement in real time—much like Live PD, but with an even more authentic edge. We talk about his journey from service to film, the challenges of filming alongside law enforcement, and his vision for ARN’s future. 💙 Support the mission: Donate to the William H. “Bill” Butler Jr. Foundation: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com/donate 🌐 Website: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com 🎙 Want to be a guest? On this special 9/11 episode of the 8158 Podcast: Stories of Sacrifice, we pause to honor the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the families who continue to carry the weight of that day. We reflect on the mission of our podcast and the William H. “Bill” Butler Jr. Foundation—lifting up first responders, veterans, and their families through storytelling, support, and community. As we remember the unity that defined us in the days after 9/11, we also address today’s heavy news: the tragic murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In a time marked by division, we discuss the urgent need to reject violence, stand together, and recommit to compassion, civility, and care for one another. If today stirs up painful memories, please reach out. Healing happens in community—you are not alone. 💙 💙 Support the mission: Donate to the William H. “Bill” Butler Jr. Foundation: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com/donate 🌐 Website: 🔗 https://www.8158podcast.com 🎙 Want to be a guest?
